How do the odds work?
The number is the odds there's no in-person school (closed or remote) on the day at the top of the screen. A two-hour delay doesn't count. It comes from:
- When the snow lands. Snow from noon the day before to 3pm on the day counts. Midnight to 7am counts in full; the evening before and early morning count less, and late morning even less.
- How much. Apple Weather's low, expected and high snowfall, blended. Hours right around freezing count less; sleet counts as snow.
- Your town's normal. The amount that makes it a coin flip is set by how much snow your town gets in a year: roughly 0.7″ in Atlanta, 4.1″ in Hartford, 8.1″ in Buffalo.
- Weather Service alerts. The strongest active winter alert nudges the odds up, if the forecast has snow to back it.
It stays between 3% and 97%. Under 15% is no chance, 35–59% is a coin flip, 85% and up is about as close to a lock as weather gets. The full explainer is in the app under Settings › How the odds work.
Is it official?
No. Not official — your district decides. Snow Day isn't connected to any school or district. Always go by your district's own announcement.
It said 90% and we had school. What happened?
Odds aren't promises. Snow can come in lighter or later than forecast, roads can get cleared faster than expected, and some districts just don't close. If it keeps missing for your town, email me the town and dates and I'll look at how the bar is set there. Your “Did it happen?” answers stay on your phone, so I only hear about it if you tell me.
How do I change my town?
Tap Change town at the top of the main screen and search, or tap the location button to use where you are. Tap the star to save a town; you can keep up to five and switch between them from the chips. Remove saved towns in Settings.
Why does it ask for my location? Do I have to allow it?
No. Location is only used to check the forecast where you are, and only while you're using the app. You can search for a town instead and never grant permission. To change it later, open iOS Settings, find Snow Day, and pick a Location option. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
Does it work outside the US?
The forecast works anywhere Apple Weather does. Alerts come from the National Weather Service, so they're US only, and the school holidays the app knows are US ones.
What about ice or extreme cold?
Sleet counts as snow. Freezing rain and wind chill aren't in the odds yet. Extreme cold alerts are shown in the app but don't move the number.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the app. Everything Snow Day keeps (your towns, settings, history and record) lives only on your phone, and it goes with the app. We don't have a copy.
I got a new phone. Do I pay again?
No. Sign in with the same Apple Account and download Snow Day again from the App Store at no charge. Your history doesn't move over, since it was only ever on the old phone.
How do I get a refund?
Apple handles all payments, so refunds go through Apple: visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose Snow Day. I can't issue refunds directly, but I'm happy to help if something isn't working.
Something crashed or looks broken.
Force-quit and reopen the app first. If it keeps happening, email me your iPhone model, iOS version, the town you were checking and what you tapped. Snow Day has no crash reporting, so your email is how I find out.
